Reducing alcohol use and improving medication adherence among HIV-positive hazardous drinkers
In collaboration with medical providers at Mt. Sinai St.Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, we are implementing the PLUS intervention to reduce alcohol use and improve antiretroviral medication adherence among HIV-positive hazardous drinkers.
Adherence to HIV medication can be difficult for many reasons (including side effects and complicated regimens), but alcohol and/or drug use is often a particular barrier and concern. Utilizing a multi-site comparative effectiveness trial in a real-world clinical setting, this study is designed to better understand alcohol-related outcomes among HIV-positive individuals over their lifespan. PLUS is an efficacious, theory-based intervention that utilizes motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral skills training to reduce alcohol use and improve medication adherence.
