Reducing alcohol use and improving medication adherence for youth living with HIV
In collaboration with the Adolescent Trials Network, we are implementing the Healthy Choices intervention to reduce alcohol use and improve antiretroviral medication adherence among youth living with HIV (YLH).
Adherence to HIV medication can be difficult for many reasons (including side effects and complicated regimens), but alcohol and/or drug use is often a particular barrier and concern. This study utilizes an intervention design based on the Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) theoretical model to address alcohol use, medication adherence, and health outcomes in YLH, as well as determine individual, interpersonal, and environmental factors that moderate effectiveness.
